Where Are We From the Nights of Ramadan?

  • The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever prays the optional late night prayer in Ramadan with sincere faith and seeking Allah’s reward will have his past sins forgiven.” (al-Bukhari and Muslim)

  • Hudhayfah said, “I performed prayer with the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) one night, and he started reciting Surah al-Baqarah. I thought that he would bow at the end of one hundred verses, but he continued reciting. I thought that he would perhaps recite this surah entirely for this rakʿah (unit of prayer), but he continued his recitation. I thought he would perhaps bow upon completing this surah. He (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) then started reciting Surah al-Nisa’ which he followed with Surah Ali ʿImran. He took his time reciting.

When he recited a verse which mentioned the glorification of Allah, he would say, ‘Glory be to Allah,’ and when he recited a verse containing a supplication, he (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) would ask of his Lord; and when he (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) recited a verse asking one to seek Allāh’s protection, he would do so. Then he bowed and said, ‘My Lord, the Great, is free from imperfection.’ His bowing lasted about the same length of time as his standing. Upon returning to the standing posture after bowing, he would say, ‘Allah listens to him who praises Him. Praise be to You, our Lord!’ He would then stand about the same length of time as he had spent in bowing. He would then prostrate and say, ‘My Lord, the Supreme, is free from imperfection,’ and his prostration lasted nearly the same length of time as his standing.” (Muslim)

  • Muhammad b. Khafif once had a severe pain on his side so much so that it eventually became paralyzed. If he heard the call to prayer, he would order those around him to carry him to the mosque. They said to him, “Allah has given you an excuse. Pray at home.”

He replied, “No way! If you hear [the caller to prayer saying] ‘Come to prayer’ and then don’t see me in the row (for the prayer), then look for me in the graveyard.”

  • Mansur b. al-Muʿtamir would dress himself nicely at night and climb to the roof of his house and pray. When he died, a young boy from among his neighbors asked his mother, “Where is that pole that would be erected at night on the roof of our neighbor? I don’t see it anymore.”

She said, “My dear son, that wasn’t a pole, but rather Mansur. He used to pray (at night) and since then he has passed away.”

  • Abu Muslim al-Khawlani would pray at night and his feet would become very tired. He would then hit them with a stick. He would then say, “Do the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) think that they’ve preceded us? By Allah, we’ll compete with them (for the reward) so that they know that they have left behind real men.”

  • Al-Hasan used to have a young female servant and then he sold her off. When it was the middle of the night with her new master, she yelled out, “[Time for] Prayer!”

They panicked and asked her, “Is it time for the morning prayer?”

She said, “Do you not pray anything other than the obligatory prayers?!” She then got up and began to perform the late-night prayer. She then went back to al-Hasan. She told him, “You sold me to some evil people! They don’t pray anything except the obligatory prayers, and they do not fast except for the obligatory fasts! So, they returned me back to you.”

  • The righteous of the past would always turn their worship up a notch in Ramadan. The Companions during the rule of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) would pray twenty-three units of prayer and finish reading the entire Qur’an in prayer several times.

  • Ibn Hurmuz said, “The imam would recite Surah al-Baqarah in eight units of prayer. If he were to finish reciting it in twelve units of prayer, the people would think that he was going easy on them.”

  • Ibn Abi Bakr said, “By the time we finished the late-night prayer in Ramadan, we would ask the servant to be hasty with the pre-dawn meal fearing that the time of the dawn prayer would come in.”

  • Ibn Durayk said, “We had an imam in Basrah who would lead us prayers during Ramadan. He would finish reading the entire Qur’an once every three nights. When he became sick, someone else led us in prayer. He would finish reading the entire Qur’an once every four nights, so we thought that he was going easy on us.”

  • Ibn Yazid said, “The imam would read hundreds of verses so much so that we would have to lean upon staffs from the extensive standing, and we wouldn’t disperse from the prayer except at the time of the dawn prayer.”

  • It is from the loving mercy and bounties of Allah that whoever prays the tarawih prayers completely with the imam, then it is as if he prayed the entire night. The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever stands in prayer with the imam until he finishes, it is as if he spent the whole night in prayer.” (al-Bukhari and Muslim)
